Mark Your Calendar

You want to be a good gift give-r. Something unique. Memorable. Personal.

Nothing quite fits the bill for such an occasion as a piece of original artwork.  Purchasing a piece of art with a story all its own is only the beginning. The legacy continues when you weave that piece into your own life and the lives of others.

Your support of the arts through thoughtful gift-giving means so much.  I am excited to have three paintings in this fun, holiday- inspired show at RISING Gallery that will help you pick up some artwork from several prominent local Artists at quite a steal, which may even leave you with enough cha-ching to treat yourself, too.

The best part is the majority of proceeds from this sale will go directly to benefit the Museum of Biblical Art.  I hope to see you at the opening reception tomorrow night, but if you can't make it, the show will hang until 12/20.

RISING Gallery: A Work in Progress

I paid a little visit to the boys at Rising Gallery this week.  Rising has a special place in my heart, as it was the first gallery to show my personal artwork, back in 2008. Since then, they have established themselves as a major player in the Dallas Arts Scene.

After moving from their initial location on Insurance Lane just off Knox and being housed in a temporary space on Jackson Street since the Spring, they are just weeks away from unveiling their gallery's permanent home.

The cool part? Their permanent digs are directly below their current location.  This area is set to become the crown jewel uniting Southside on Lamar, Victory Park and Downtown.  Lots of eyes have been on them these past few months, and the watched pot is just about ready to boil.

I got to take a sneak peek at the (quite literal) work in progress at the gallery.

A speakeasy, moveable walls,
multi-media areas,
private event venue, cutting-edge LED lighting
...this gallery has left no detail
to chance.

They will be unveiling their new space in conjunction with the opening of the
Galileo's Garden Exhibiton
Friday 11/11, 6p-9:30p

Denver based husband and wife artists Tyler & Monica Aiello
bring their conjoined solo shows collectively titled
“Galileo’s Garden”.

I've already marked my calendar. Now mark yours.

Thursday's Other Creative Soul: Frankie Garcia

As a creative person myself, it fascinates me to learn how other like-minded souls tick. Thanks for joining me today to get to know Artist, Creative Director and Arts Advocate Frankie Garcia III.  Frankie is dedicated to bringing unity to the Arts Community in Dallas.  Having had the pleasure to collaborate with him on a few projects, I can also attest that he's a genuine, likable person who also happens to be on top of his game.

Frankie recently partnered with Rising Gallery and they moved to 800 Jackson 75202 Downtown Dallas.  Their next exhibition is tomorrow... "between the mattress and the wall" from 7-10pm .  FGIIIArt will be hosting the ROSS vs ROSS closing reception May 10th 5-8pm.

Education
self-taught

Current City/Hometown:

Tell me about your work.
PAINTING - My style is abstract constructivism. I use numerous elements in my work: canvas, metals, wood, paper, mixed media, and an array of industrial hardware. My art work incorporates strong lines and bold colors with the use of geometric shapes and circles of union which work together to create my signature visual experience.

FGIIIArt - is an umbrella organization dedicated to bringing unity within the Dallas arts as well as instilling purpose and vision into the work of the individual artist.  FGIIIArt brings awareness to what is already taking place in our art community, everyday, within the various art collectives that already exist.  Without seeking membership, FGIIIArt strives to be a community hub which serves as an earpiece and mouthpiece for the artists in Dallas as a whole.  By providing education and guidance, pooling our collective resources, and stressing the need for community, FGIIIArt works to strengthen and empower the individual artists in OUR city.

Describe your normal day.
I get up around 7am and workout... after workout, breakfast... I'm online from about 9-11am working FGIIIArt... then lunch... from 12-5pm I'm at Rising Gallery... then dinner... from about 8-midnight, I'm painting and on-line working FGIIIArt simultaneously... Monday-Friday.  lot's of coffee...

What would your *ideal* day be like?
painting and creating/building all day... reading/educating myself... staying healthy... if it paid the bills.

What are your passions?
painting, being an advocate for the arts, educating myself and giving back to my community

What are your goals?
someday have a working/living/studio/gallery space that influences/stimulates creative growth throughout my community

What are your creative influences?
The graffiti movement happening now... really, all things creative... I'm a huge history buff about Peggy Guggenheims abstract expressionist movement

Are there any other relevant experiences that shaped who you are today and what you do?
I once had the privilege to create works on canvas (7'x10') with children from the Boy's and Girl's Club... working with and watching those kids paint/draw with such ease... never stopping to consider or over analyze their next stroke stayed with me and permanently influenced my creative freedom.

"Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up."
Pablo Picasso

Is there anyone who you really look up to as an inspiration?
Willem de Kooning

What motivates you on a daily basis?
Knowing that I'm very fortunate to be able to make a living with my creative abilities

Do you have a guilty pleasure that you can't miss out on to get you going?
I play hip hop music and lip sing/karaoke and dance while I paint... that's all I'm saying

What's your working style? Do you work for 12 hours straight nonstop, or do you take lots of breaks?
When I paint I have the music going and I'm in it... however long it takes to complete it... of course there's dry time... with my process sometimes dry time takes days... I usually know what I want the finished piece to reflect so I work it to achieve it with passion and excitement.

''I am a night painter, so when I come into the studio the next morning the delirium is over. I come into the studio very fearfully, I creep in to see what happened the night before. And the feeling is one of, "My God, did I do that?"

I cannot do everything, but I can do something

Created for Alley's House Incrementum Art Auction

I am a mom of three children under five.  The reality is, I do not have a lot of spare time.  Eventually I hope to be able to give back by spending time doing acts of service with my children and husband, but we are just not there yet. In the meantime, the way I feel like I can help is by contributing my paintings to organizations that I feel serve causes that are important to me.  One of these such organizations is Alley's House, who provides education, support services and empowerment to teen moms in need.

Here is the info for Incrementum, which takes place this Saturday night at RISING Gallery & Creative Haus in Dallas.  I hope to see some of my Dallas friends there!

Please join us for an evening of 200 works of art celebrating INCREMENTUM Saturday, February 26 between 7-11 p.m.

We are excited about this year's art auction which will feature 200 local artists who have joined us in supporting our mission to empower teen mothers and their children to become independent.

Each piece of art will be part of a silent auction, however, 10 pieces will be live auctioned.

It will be a festive evening of beautiful art, complimentary wine and hors d'oeuvres and live jazz by The Brehms!

INCREMENTUM is a collaborative event with FGIIIART.

Can't attend, but would like to support alley's house? You can donate online at http://www.alleyshouse.org/donate.htm.

Thursday's Other Creative Soul: Bryan Wetz

A s a creative person myself, I am fascinated with what makes other like-minded types tick. Thanks for joining me today for an interview with local Interior Designer and Co-Owner of RISING Gallery, Bryan Wetz. I have had the pleasure of getting to know Bryan as I have shown at RISING, and am pleased to share that he is just as personable as he is talented and dedicated to being an arts advocate in the local community.

Education
I hold an interior design degree from Oklahoma State University...and I love my Cowboys!

Current City/Hometown
I'm originally from Midwest City, OK (a suburb of Oklahoma City).  I moved to Dallas in 2002 and I'm here to stay.

Tell me about your work in one sentence.
My work is modern with a twist and always guaranteed to be original.

Describe your normal day.
Coffee to get me going.  I'm an early bird so I like to get the day going and enjoy the sunlite as long as possible. It's off to the gallery for a day of design and project management.  Being self-employed it's a constant pursuit of the next job and networking while trying to stay on top of the current job.  I usually end the day with a brainstorm session with my brother at our art gallery.  Then it's time to wind down....I love to cook and spend the evening with my wife.

The "ideal" day....I'd take my time enjoying my coffee and watching the news.  I'd stroll into work and see the orders for my custom designs rolling in and see what needs to be filled that day.  I'd sit down and start work on my "magnum opus".  I'd be traveling a lot for shows I'm participating in, but when I'm in town, I'd end the day with some drinks with my favorite people.  Then home for a good home-cooked meal and time with my wife.   Someday soon I hope!!! :)

What are your passions?
Personally...I love my family and friends.  They keep me going and push me when I need a push. I love to laugh and have a good time.  I love listening to music and seeing good art and design in whatever form it comes.  I love a good surprise!
Professionally...design, design, design.  It's hard to create something that hasn't been done before.  I try to create, not copy!  It's a challenge to free my head of all the things I've seen before.  I use it for inspiration only and try to come up something original. I want people to appreciate what I do by enjoying what they've purchased from me or enjoy the time they've spent in one of the environments I created.  To be honest and original...

What are your goals?
I'm a provider by nature.  I want to be remembered someday for the work I've done and know that I did it the best I could and in the process I want the people that work with me to know that they are taken care of and jobs are always secure.  My ultimate goal is to know that I've done enough work to secure my future so I can spend more time doing the design I love and taking care of my family.
In some way I want to know that I left my mark on society in my own little way and people everyday will be enjoying it!

Who are your creative influences?
This could get lengthy...I'm inspired by architecture and many early designers.  Charles Rennie MackintoshFrank Lloyd Wright, Gerrit Reitveld, Mies van der RoheLe CorbusierAlvar Aalto,Charles and Ray Eames, Finn Juhl, Eero Saarinen, and Isamu Noguchi...to name a few.

Are there any other relevant experiences that shaped who you are today and what you do?
I have an early memory that I always go back to that seemed to make a lasting impression on me.  My church was having an arts and crafts fair when I was maybe a first grader.  A church pastor was an artists and had a table set up where he would teach how to draw.  I stayed at that booth for the whole fair.  I copied a drawing of a windmill he had drawn.  That was when I knew art was my future.  I wanted to be a career artist, but in college I fell in love with furniture design.  I mesh the two by approaching my design work as functional art!

How do you set the table for your muse?
Sitting at my drafting table (yes I design the old school way).  Paper in front of me, pen/pencil in hand, good tunes in the background and pix of recent inspirations taped to the wall in front of me alongside my recent new designs that can always use an additional tweak! Now I'm ready!

Is there anyone  that you really look up to as an inspiration?
I don't really get star struck or necessarily look up to anyone famous...I look up to people that make me laugh and put a smile on my face.  My mom, who I lost in 1999, is a big inspiration to me.  She saw my talents, and although she didn't always know what to do to guide me, she always encouraged me to keep pursuing my art and design.  The most important life lesson I learned from her was "tomorrow is promised to no one" and b/c of that I try to make the most of each day.

What motivates you on a daily basis?
Good design, "out-of-the-box" thinking and ideas, music, and art! My true guilty pleasure is my Pearl Lite Latte from The Pearl Cup (extra shot of expresso is a must).  I have a caffeine addiction I think!  I must feed it!

What's your working style?
I like to multi-task.  It makes the day go by fast.  But when I start on new designs, I like to work on them for hours at a time.

Facebook Fan Pages:

-that's where you can find my work....I must let you know that I'm revamping both sites, so expect changes soon!!
I have a love/hate relationship with FB.  I enjoy posting my new designs for everyone to see and always love the feedback, good or bad.  Become friends with Studio Wetz and/or Bryan Wetz Interiors.  I hate FB b/c it can easily suck you in and waste your time.
